How do people “love” the world? They do so by greedily and selfishly loving all that it offers them, such as riches, power, and self-indulgence. People cannot love both God and the world—such “loves” are mutually exclusive. The word for “love” here does not mean the self-sacrificing love that believers are to have for God and others; instead, it means taking pleasure in something, in this case, taking pleasure in what is opposed to God.
